This 1 day course is aimed at yachtsmen who wish to obtain
the GMDSS VHF-Short Range Certificate. No prior knowledge of
radio communications is required and a comprehensive set of
course notes is given out at the start of the course.

- Overview of GMDSS
- Sea areas, MMSI and equipment
- Distress, Urgency, Safety and Routine calls
- Procedure for making distress, urgency, safety and routine
calls
- General VHF knowledge and radio propagation
- Use of VHF channels and Admiralty List of Radio Signals

- Use VHF equipment in practice
- Based on Simrad RD68 VHF-DSC radio and RYA approved
simulators
- Navtex, EPIRBs and SARTs

- Icom IC-M501 VHF marine transceiver
- Icom DS-100 DSC unit
- Nasa SX35 DSC transceiver
- Nasa Target Navtex receiver
- ICS NAV6 Navtex receiver
- Pains Wessex EPIRB and SART
Student numbers are kept to a maximum of 8 students per course
and although we cover all the topics in the SRC syllabus, pre-course
study is well advised.

Candidates must bring along a current passport size photograph of themselves
and a cheque made payable to 'RYA' for £19. There will be a short assessment
towards the end of the day. Candidates will be sent their VHF-SRC operator's
certificate from the RYA.
