GMDSS Short Range Certificate (update)

This half day course is aimed at yachtsmen who wish to upgrade from the old VHF restricted certificate to the new GMDSS Short Range Certificate.

A comprehensive set of course notes is given out at the start of the course and real GMDSS equipment is used.

Topics covered: -

• Overview of GMDSS
  • Sea areas A1
  • MMSI numbers, what are they and the 3 types.
  • Overview of GMDSS Equipment.
    • VHF Digital Seclecive Calling (DSC).
    • Navtax.
    • EPIRP and SART.
• Distress, Urgency, Safety and Routine calls using DSC.
  • Procedure for making DSC calls.

Equipment used during course includes :-

• Icom IC-M501 VHF marine transceiver
• Icom DS-100 DSC unit
• Nasa SX 35 DSC DSC transceiver
• Nasa Target Navtex receiver
• ICS NAV6 Navtex receiver
• Pains Wessex EPIRB and SART

A Demonstration of the equipment will be give during the course and you can try first hand using the equipment.

Student numbers are kept to a maximum of 8 students per course and although we cover all the topics in the SRC syllabus, pre-course study is well advised.

Candidates must bring along their old VHF restricted certificate plus a current passport size photograph of themselves and a cheque made payable to 'RYA' for £20. There will be a short assessment towards the end of the course. Candidates will be sent their VHF-SRC operator's certificate from the RYA.
