This half day course is aimed at yachtsmen who wish to upgrade
from the old VHF restricted certificate to the new GMDSS Short
Range Certificate.
A comprehensive set of course notes is given out at the start
of the course and real GMDSS equipment is used.
Topics covered: -
- Overview of GMDSS
- Sea areas A1
- MMSI numbers, what are they and the 3 types.
- Overview of GMDSS Equipment.
- VHF Digital Seclecive Calling (DSC).
- Navtax.
- EPIRP and SART.
- Distress, Urgency, Safety and Routine calls using DSC.
- Procedure for making DSC calls.
Equipment used during course includes :-
- Icom IC-M501 VHF marine transceiver
- Icom DS-100 DSC unit
- Nasa SX 35 DSC DSC transceiver
- Nasa Target Navtex receiver
- ICS NAV6 Navtex receiver
- Pains Wessex EPIRB and SART
A Demonstration of the equipment will be give during the course
and you can try first hand using the equipment.
Student numbers are kept to a maximum of 8 students per course
and although we cover all the topics in the SRC syllabus, pre-course
study is well advised.

Candidates must bring along their old VHF restricted certificate plus
a current passport size photograph of themselves and a cheque made payable
to 'RYA' for £20. There will be a short assessment towards the end of
the course. Candidates will be sent their VHF-SRC operator's certificate
from the RYA.
